By 1980 the CB125 was a simple, cheap single-cylinder commuter, and the JX version got mainly cosmetic updates such as new indicators, levers and styling details, along with a switch to CDI ignition. Testers praised its near-80 mpg economy and low price but criticised the weak drum brakes, grabby clutch and short-travel suspension. It still topped out near 70 mph and was one of the last pure small street bikes on sale in the US.
