The CB400SS was a Japan-market retro single built around a 397 cc air-cooled four-valve engine, styled after classic British-type roadsters with a 19-inch front wheel and twin rear shocks. It kept a kickstarter alongside the electric start for character. Light and simple, it appealed to riders wanting an easy-going classic-look bike rather than performance.
