1978 was the first US year of the Hawk, offered as the basic kick-start Hawk I with drum brakes, the better-equipped Hawk II with a front disc, Comstar wheels, tachometer and electric start, and the Hondamatic. In Japan the bike received a minor update in March 1978 with a revised fuel tank and damping. It earned a name as a reliable, sweet-handling middleweight twin.
