The original Hornet launched in Europe in 1998 as Honda's budget naked middleweight, using a retuned CBR600F four-cylinder fed by smaller 34 mm carburettors for stronger low and midrange pull. It sat on a simple steel backbone frame with a fat 16-inch front tyre and a high-level under-seat exhaust, giving it a stocky streetfighter look. Light, quick-steering and cheap to run, it became a big seller and even spawned its own one-make race series.
