The Hornet S added a small frame-mounted bikini fairing and screen to the naked Hornet, answering complaints about wind blast on longer runs. Underneath it shared the carburetted CBR600F-derived engine, steel backbone frame and new 17-inch front wheel of the 2000 Hornet, making it a quicker-feeling commuter and light tourer, though many buyers still preferred the unfaired look.
