Launched in late 1996 as a 1997 model, the CBR1100XX was Honda's answer to Kawasaki's ZZ-R1100 in the race for the fastest production bike, and magazine tests put it just ahead. Its 1137 cc carburettor four used twin balancer shafts and was a stressed member of an aluminium twin-spar frame, while the slim, wind-tunnel-shaped fairing with stacked headlights kept drag low. It paired that speed with linked brakes and genuine touring comfort.
