Before series production began, Honda built a batch of 41 sand-cast pre-production CBX six-cylinder machines for development and the November 1977 press launch at Suzuka. They differed from customer bikes mainly in details such as chrome cylinder-head bolts and the shape of the anti-vibration rubbers. American magazine Cycle ran a pre-production bike around Orange County Raceway, Willow Springs and the dyno and declared that Honda had built the fastest production motorcycle on sale.
