The M1 was an experimental grand-touring machine built in 1972 by a Honda team led by Soichiro Irimajiri. It used a liquid-cooled 1470 cc flat-six mounted lengthways with shaft drive, tuned for broad torque rather than peak power. It was never meant for production, and its cramped riding position pushed the team towards the more compact flat-four of the GL1000; the bike survives at Honda R&D.
