The 1989 SP (MC18 R6k) built on the updated 1989 NSR250R with magnesium wheels, a dry multi-plate clutch and fully adjustable suspension at both ends. These changes made it the go-to base for production racing. Engine output and dimensions were otherwise the same as the standard bike.
