The 1988 NX650 Dominator launched Honda's big-single road-biased trail bike, using a 644 cc four-valve engine enlarged from the XR600R unit and fitted with a gear-driven balancer, electric start and a back-up kick-starter. A frame-mounted half-fairing blended into the tank, twin high-level silencers and gold wheels gave it a distinctive look. It was light and agile on back roads and in town, but tests found it short of breath at sustained motorway speeds.
