Honda built the RC51 to beat Ducati at its own game after World Superbike rules favoured 1000 cc twins. The SP1 used an all-new 90-degree V-twin with gear-driven cams and twin-injector fuel injection, ram-air intake and a stiff aluminium twin-spar frame. It won the World Superbike title in its debut season with Colin Edwards.
