For 1984 Honda cut the US Magna's V4 from 748 cc to 699 cc to get under the new American tariff on imported bikes over 700 cc, and sold it as the VF700C. It kept the cruiser formula of shaft drive, twin rear shocks, a stepped seat and a 16-inch rear wheel. Testers liked its smooth, linear power and relaxed manners but criticised the soft suspension and loud intake roar. For 1985 a restyled V42 Magna with a 15-inch rear wheel replaced it.
