The VF700S was the 1984-1985 US Sabre, a shaft-drive V4 standard whose engine was shrunk from 748 cc to 699 cc by shortening the stroke, to avoid the US tariff on bikes over 700 cc. Honda also made it more conventional than the original V45 Sabre, with ordinary instruments, a round handlebar and quieter paint. Reviewers saw it as a smooth, versatile all-rounder rather than a standout performer.
