The EF was the late-production version of Honda's VT500E, the Europe-only middleweight that replaced the CX500 as a practical shaft-drive commuter and tourer. Its narrow 52-degree V-twin uses offset crankpins rather than balancer shafts, giving a slim engine with three-valve, liquid-cooled heads and a six-speed box with an overdrive top. A small handlebar fairing, 18-inch Comstar wheels and an enclosed front disc carried over; the bike's reliability and low running costs made it a favourite with UK despatch riders.
