For 2001 the carburetted, five-speed Varadero gained Honda's HISS engine immobiliser and production moved to the Montesa Honda plant near Barcelona, where bikes carried the SD02 frame code. Mechanically and dimensionally it is otherwise the same big touring V-twin as the 1999 original.
