The XL125S modernised Honda's small trail bike with maintenance-free electronic (CDI) ignition, a close-ratio gearbox, a skid plate and longer-travel suspension. Testers liked its reliability and easy four-stroke upkeep, and found it nimble on trails. The engine needed revs because it had little low-down torque, and a top speed of about 55 mph limited it to commuting and back roads. It was set up as a solo machine, with no passenger pegs.
