The 1982 XL250R was the first big revision of Honda's 250 trail bike, with a new 75 x 56.5 mm engine using a single gear-driven balancer, an automatic cam-chain tensioner and a sixth gear, plus 12-volt electrics. The chassis switched to a lighter frame, Pro-Link single-shock rear and a 21-inch front wheel. Tests found it tractable and predictable on tight trails but strained at highway speeds.
