For 1983 the XL250R kept its six-speed balanced single and Pro-Link chassis, but Honda changed the front brake back to a leading/trailing-shoe drum, which brakes equally well going forwards or rolling back on a hill. A California version added an evaporative-emissions canister. Testers liked its manners on tight trails and its fuel economy of 60 mpg and better.
