The 1984 XL250R continued the Pro-Link, six-speed formula of the 1982 redesign. According to Wikipedia, this year also brought Honda's radial four-valve (RFVC) engine with twin progressively opening carburettors, which ran through to 1987, when the XL250R ended in the USA and gave way to the NX250.
