The 1980 - 1981 XL250S carried on with the four-valve single and 23-inch front wheel, with small updates such as a rear chain tensioner and, for 1981, a bigger rear brake hub and revised clutch. It was the last XL250 with twin rear shocks and 6-volt electrics before the Pro-Link XL250R took over, and reviewers found it a strong, economical and reliable trail bike that also worked well on the road.
