In 1984 the XL350R was tested by Cycle World, which rated the radial-valve 339 cc single as brisk and flexible, with good brakes and handling for trail use. It sat between the XL250R and XL600R in Honda's dual-purpose range and shared its engine design with the XR350R, but used cheaper parts and milder tuning to stay road legal. Its weaknesses were a tall seat, weight typical of four-stroke dual-sports and a slightly awkward cold-start drill.
