The XL400R was a short-stroke 398 cc version of the XL500R, built for markets such as Japan and Europe and never sold in the United States. It shared the bigger bike's chassis and four-valve single-cylinder layout, with drum brakes at both ends, air-assisted forks and a small 10-litre tank. Honda covered it in the same service manual as the XL500R.
