For 1980 the XL500S carried on with the same counterbalanced 497 cc four-valve single, five-speed gearbox and 23-inch front wheel as the launch model. It stayed a well-rounded road-and-trail machine with strong low-down pull, let down mainly by modest drum brakes and an awkward sidestand and steering-lock arrangement.
