In 1997-1999 the XR200R was largely a carry-over model, still built around the air-cooled 195 cc two-valve single with kick start and drum brakes front and rear. Honda kept it in the range as a simple, reliable trail bike that slotted between the small XR100 and the larger four-valve XR250R. Its modest power and low seat made it popular with beginners.
