1986 was a clean-sheet year for the XR250R: with the XR350R dropped, Honda gave the 250 a longer-stroke 73 x 59.5 mm RFVC engine fed by a single carburettor, a twin oil pump with an oil cooler, a lighter chassis and longer-travel suspension with 41 mm forks and an aluminium Pro-Link swingarm. Aimed at enduro and trail riders, it was praised at the time for its broad, tractable power and climbing ability, while testers wanted more rebound damping at the rear and taller footpegs. The rear brake remained a drum.
