For 1988 the XR250R remained the same air-cooled four-valve RFVC single in the long-travel chassis introduced two years earlier, still with a front disc and rear drum. Contemporary tests rated it light and easy to ride but soft in the suspension and modest in output, and aftermarket tuners offered exhaust, airbox and jetting kits plus heavier springs to turn it into a more serious trail weapon.
