1989 was the last XR250R year with a rear drum brake and damper-rod forks before the 1990 update. Otherwise it continued the proven formula: a 249 cc kick-start RFVC single with a 30 mm carburettor and six-speed gearbox, 41 mm air-assisted forks and remote-reservoir Pro-Link rear suspension, aimed at trail and enduro riding.
