The 1998 XR400R stayed true to the original recipe of a torquey air-cooled four-stroke in a light, well-sprung chassis. Comparison tests of the time set it against Kawasaki's KLX300R. They rated the Honda the better pick for bigger, more aggressive riders and open desert, praised its easy servicing, and noted some hesitation when the throttle was snapped open. Honda's Power-Up kit for 1996 - 1998 XR models was a popular upgrade.
