Essentially a carry-over of the 1985-86 XR600R with fresh graphics: the 591 cc four-valve RFVC single still breathed through twin 28 mm Keihin carburettors and stopped with a front disc and rear drum. Testers praised its broad low and midrange pull, comfort and reliability, while noting soft suspension for big landings. It was the last year before Honda's first significant update in 1988.
