For 2017 - 2018 Honda kept the XR650L in the range with the same air-cooled single, dry-sump lubrication with the oil held in the frame backbone, and full street equipment. It remained a durable, no-frills dual-sport able to commute during the week and tackle trails or two-up riding at weekends.
