The 1982 GPz 550 brought a new single-shock Uni-Trak rear suspension, revised fork damping and new carburettors, with a slightly longer wheelbase. The Cycle World reviewers rated it one of the best-handling middleweight sport bikes of the period, though their test bike made less power than the 1981 test unit.
