The Z800 was Kawasaki's successor to the Z750, launched to mark 40 years since the original Z1. It was built around an 806 cc engine tuned for low-to-mid-range torque, with a shorter final drive for stronger acceleration. The bike combined a tubular backbone frame, a 41 mm inverted fork, 310 mm front discs with 4-piston calipers and a digital instrument panel, and ABS was optional.
