The 1998 ZX-9R was a full redesign of Kawasaki's big sportbike, with a cable clutch, direct valve actuation, plug-top coils and a lighter, slimmer chassis. The frame lost its steel engine cradles and the wheelbase was shortened by 30 mm. Suspension moved to 46 mm forks and a lighter piggyback shock, giving the bike a sleeker look than the 1994-97 models.
