The 400 EXC is KTM's competition-oriented 398 cc single, with a four-valve SOHC head, a Keihin carburettor and a fully adjustable WP rear shock. A 1996 road test described it as a motocross-style machine with strong mid-range power, light weight and quality parts such as Magura bars. The reviewer also noted slight front fork stiction, which they put down to needing service.
