By 1974 the Commando 850 was the Mk II generation of Norton's late twin, with the 829 cc engine and Isolastic rubber mounting. It was offered in several body styles such as Interstate and Roadster. The design dated back to the late 1940s, and period criticism centred on dated performance and braking rather than on character.
