The DR 400S succeeded the DR 370 with a bore-enlarged 396 cc engine, electronic ignition in place of points, and a new steel frame and swingarm with more suspension travel. Road testers found the torque better and the power adequate, and praised the steering and stability in sand and mountain trail riding, though they called the bike heavy and puncture-prone on rocky ground.
