The DR650 appeared in early 1990 as the successor to the 590 cc DR600, using an enlarged, longer-stroke version of that single in a reinforced chassis. This R/S entry is the Djebel-style dirt-bike model (sold as the Dakar in some markets), with a 21-litre tank, a kick starter and an open, unfaired front end. It was aimed at long-distance and off-road riders and became one of the big dual-sport singles of its era.
