The first FZR250 brought Yamaha's race-replica styling to the quarter-litre class, with a high-revving liquid-cooled four-cylinder engine and a fully faired steel-framed chassis. It was mainly a Japanese-market sports bike that found its way abroad as a grey import. Reviewers praised its handling but noted a rough-starting engine and sloppy gearbox.
