The SR500 was Yamaha's long-running kick-start-only retro single, built around an air-cooled 499 cc engine derived from the XT500 off-road bike. By this period it was a simple, light road bike with a front disc, rear drum and no electric starter, using a compression-release lever and a window in the cam cover to help with starting. It appealed to riders wanting a traditional, easy-to-maintain classic.
