By 1975 the Yamaha 500 twin was being sold as the XS500, with revised carburettor jetting, plunger-type enrichers and an intake balance tube. It kept the DOHC eight-valve twin, five-speed gearbox, electric start and front disc of the original. Testers liked its high-revving power and smooth shifting but found it weak at low revs and cold-blooded.
