The first-generation TZR125 was a small sports two-stroke for European and South-East Asian markets, with a box fairing, clip-on bars, a single seat and a liquid-cooled reed-valve engine with Yamaha's power-valve system. It had a six-speed gearbox, Monocross rear suspension, a front disc and a rear drum. It brought race-replica styling to the learner class.
