Yamaha's turbocharged XJ650 used a small Mitsubishi turbo tucked behind the gearbox in a blow-through layout, with forged pistons, lower compression, a knock sensor and an oil cooler. It made about 90 hp and was lively above roughly 6000 rpm, though turbo lag and its weight drew criticism. It was one of the few catalogue turbo bikes of the early 1980s, alongside the Honda CX500 Turbo.
