The XJR400 appeared in 1993 as a retro-styled air-cooled four-cylinder naked bike for the Japanese 400 class, with four BSR30 carburettors and a six-speed box. A limited run of about 4,000 "S" models in 1994 added Ohlins rear shocks. It was the little brother of the larger XJR range.
