This was a pre-production forerunner of the Ténéré, born from a 1981 suggestion by Yamaha's European planners for a replica of the Paris-Dakar rally machines with a very large fuel tank and big single-cylinder engine. The concept was hard to sell inside Japan, but the engineers took it up and delivered the production Ténéré for 1983.
