The XTZ660 Ténéré replaced the air-cooled XT600Z in 1991, introducing a liquid-cooled five-valve single of 660 cc. It was slimmer and more road-biased than earlier Ténérés, with shorter suspension travel, a 20-litre tank and an oil tank built into the frame. Period testing found it flexible and comfortable but not a serious off-road tool.
