The Thunderace was Yamaha's stop-gap litre sportbike, pairing a retuned FZR1000 EXUP engine with a chassis adapted from the YZF750R. The motor was tuned for midrange rather than peak power, with lighter rotating parts and carburettors carrying throttle position sensors that help run the exhaust valve. It was light for its class and well balanced, though mirror vibration and thirst at high speed were criticised. 1996 was its first model year.
