The 1999 Thunderace is the same hybrid of FZR1000-derived five-valve four and YZF750R-style aluminium frame, rated at 145 hp. It was the lightest litre-class machine of its time at 198 kg dry, with sharp steering and a flexible midrange. Known drawbacks were buzzing mirrors and heavy fuel use at speed. It sat beside the sharper R1 in Yamaha's line-up as the more relaxed sports option.
