For 2001 the Thunderace remained the grown-up alternative to the R1, with the same 1002 cc carburetted four and aluminium twin-spar chassis. It offered strong midrange, stable handling and good braking with a riding position suited to both sport and touring. High-speed fuel consumption and mirror buzz were the usual complaints.
