The original R1 arrived in 1998 as a new benchmark for litre sportbikes. Its compact 998 cc five-valve four stacked the gearbox shafts to shorten the engine, allowing a short wheelbase and long swingarm with a very light 177 kg dry weight. Power was around 149 hp from carburettors, and it was sharp and fast but demanding to ride. A clutch recall and later coolant hose clamp recall affected early bikes.
