The 1999 R1 was a light update of the 1998 original, with little beyond new paint and graphics, a redesigned gearchange linkage with a longer shaft, and a smaller fuel reserve (4.0 L instead of 5.5 L; tank still 18 L). Mechanically it kept the stacked-gearbox carburetted 998 cc four with its short wheelbase and razor-sharp handling. It remained a very quick but unforgiving superbike.
